Alex Chernov was born in Wilno, Poland in 1938 to Russian parents, and migrated with his family to Salzburg, Austria, after the Soviet invasion, where he commenced his schooling.

Alex Chernov graduated as a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne in 1961 and 1968 respectively as a resident of Ormond College.
