John David Gillanders was born on May 18,1939 and is an American competition swimmer, Olympic medalist, and former world record-holder.

Originally from Schenectady, New York, Dave Gillanders graduated from Dondero High School in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1957.

Dave Gillanders was inducted into the Royal Oak High School Hall of Fame in 1996.

Dave Gillanders won NCAA individual titles in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events in 1959 and 1961, and was a member of the Michigan Wolverines team that won the NCAA championship in the 400-yard medley relay in 1959.

At Michigan, Dave Gillanders earned a bachelor's degree in 1962, a master's degree in 1963, and eventually a PhD in electrical engineering in 1972.

In 2004, Dave Gillanders was elected to the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor.

Dave Gillanders represented the United States as a 21-year-old at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy.

At the Olympics, Dave Gillanders won a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly, again finishing behind Troy and Australian Neville Hayes.
