Douglas Chalmers was educated at Bearwood House, a private school in Berkshire, England.

Douglas Chalmers later completed a Master of Arts degree from the United States Army's School of Advanced Military Studies and a Master of Philosophy degree from Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
