Fabio Panetta was born on 1 August 1959 and is an Italian economist who has been serving as Governor of the Bank of Italy since 2023.

Fabio Panetta previously served as a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank from 2020 until 2023.

The son of the former mayor of Pescosolido, Paolino Fabio Panetta, Fabio Panetta was born in Rome in 1959.

Fabio Panetta joined the Bank of Italy's Research Department in 1985, becoming Head of its Monetary and Financial Division in 1999.

From 8 October 2012 to 9 May 2019 Fabio Panetta served as Deputy Director-General of the Bank of Italy, and immediately after he became Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Italy.
