Ivo Eensalu graduated from Jarvakandi Secondary School in 1967 and enrolled in the Performing Arts Department of the Tallinn State Conservatory the following year, studying drama with instructor Voldemar Panso, and graduating in 1972.

Ivo Eensalu began an engagement the Estonian SSR State Youth Theatre in Tallinn in 1972, where he would remain until 1977.
