Katumba Wamala served as the inspector general of police of the Uganda Police Force, the highest rank in that branch of Uganda's government, from 2001 until 2005.

On 1 June 2021, Katumba Wamala survived an assassination attempt in Kisaasi, a Kampala suburb when gunmen attacked and wounded the General, killing his daughter and driver, leaving him with gunshot wounds on both shoulders.
