Madhavan Chandradathan was born to Madhavan and Vasumathy, in Varkala.

Madhavan Chandradathan graduated in chemical engineering from the Government Engineering College, Thrissur in 1971 and secured a master's degree from the Birla Institute of Technology in 1985.
