Nissim Kanekar, born on 11 September 1973 in Mumbai in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, did his undergraduate studies at Ramnarain Ruia College of Mumbai University and, after earning a graduate degree in physics in 1991, moved to Savitribai Phule Pune University for his master's studies to obtain an MSc in 1995.
