Padmarajan was the founder of a new school of film making in Malayalam cinema, along with Bharathan and K G George, in the 1980s.

Padmarajan won the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award in 1972 for his novel Nakshathrangale Kaval.

Padmarajan made his directorial debut in 1979 with Peruvazhiyambalam which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam.
