Peter Malcolm William Entwisle was a New Zealand art historian and writer, notably on the history of Dunedin and of New Zealand art.

Peter Entwisle's father, Arnold, had been born in Cheshire, and moved to London where he worked as a buyer for a bookshop.

From a young age, Peter became acquainted with many of the city's top literary and intellectual names, whom his father had become friends with through his university work.

Peter Entwisle attended George Street Normal School, Dunedin North Intermediate, and Otago Boys' High School, before enrolling at the University of Otago in 1968.

Peter Entwisle graduated in 1975 with a BA and MLitt in philosophy.

Peter Entwisle returned to Dunedin in 1980 where he began work at Dunedin Public Art Gallery, of which he was appointed curator, a post he held for 20 years.

Peter Entwisle was a member of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust from 1985.

Peter Entwisle died on 14 March 2018 due to illness at his home in central Dunedin.
