Stephen James McCabe, Baron McCabe was born on 4 August 1955 and is a British politician who served as a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2024.

Stephen Steve McCabe was born on 4 August 1955 in Port Glasgow.

Steve McCabe attended Port Glasgow High School before studying at Moray House College in Edinburgh, where he was awarded a Diploma in Social Studies in 1977 and qualified as a social worker.

Steve McCabe worked as a social worker in Wolverhampton for six years from 1977, and from 1978 to 1982 was a shop steward with the National and Local Government Officers Association.

Steve McCabe left the Priory in 1985 and returned to education, graduating with an MA in Social Work at the University of Bradford in 1986.

Steve McCabe remained in this position until his election to the House of Commons.

Steve McCabe was elected as a councillor to Birmingham City Council in 1990 and served until 1998, during which time he was the chair of the city's technical services committee.

Steve McCabe joined the government Whips Office in 2006 as an Assistant, and from 2007 was a Lord Commissioner to the Treasury.

In October 2006, Steve McCabe applied for selection to the redrawn constituency of Birmingham Selly Oak, which incorporated much of his existing seat.
