Wang Hua was born in Qi, Guanghan Commandery, which is present-day Guanghan, Sichuan.

Wang Hua was a descendant of Wang Tang, the Court Architect of the Han dynasty.

Wang Hua's grandfather, Wang Shang, whose courtesy name, was Wenbiao was a highly respected official with great virtues, serving as the Administrator of Shu Commandery when Liu Zhang was Governor of Yi Province.
