Wilhelm Sauer was born in Schonbeck, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the son of blacksmith and self-educated organ builder Ernst Sauer from Karlsburg in Pomerania, and his wife Johanna Christine, nee Sumke.
