Zharmakhan Tuyakbay was the chairman of the Nationwide Social Democratic Party from 2007 to 2019 and prior to that, he served as the Majilis chairman from 1999 to 2004.

Zharmakhan Tuyakbay was born in the town of Novostroyka in South Kazakhstan Region to the parents of Aitbay Tuyakbaev, who was a collective farmer, and Tynym Tuyakbaeva.
