Barton McLean was born on 8 April 1938 and is an American composer, performer, music reviewer, and writer.

Barton McLean was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of John and Grace McLean, on April 8,1938.

Barton McLean graduated from State University of New York Potsdam, Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of Henry Cowell, and Indiana University.
