Justus Jonas, the Elder, or simply Justus Jonas, was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer.

Justus Jonas is best known for his translations of the writings of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon.

Justus Jonas entered that university in 1506, studied law and the humanities, and became Master of Arts in 1510.

Justus Jonas returned to Erfurt in Thuringia during 1514 or 1515 was ordained priest.

Justus Jonas accompanied Luther to the Diet of Worms in 1521, and there was appointed professor of canon law at Wittenberg.

Justus Jonas assisted Luther with his translation of the Bible into the German language.

Justus Jonas was busy in conferences and visitations during the next twenty years, and in diplomatic work with the princes.

Justus Jonas was present at Luther's deathbed at Eisleben, and preached the funeral sermon; in a procession Luther's body was taken to Halle and buried in Wittenberg.

From that time until his death, Justus Jonas was unable to secure a satisfactory living.

Justus Jonas wandered from place to place preaching, and finally went to Eisfeld, Thuringia, where he died, aged 62.
